Legally blonde
this was my first project as a set designer and quite possibly my favorite. for this i worked with director susan Polster and the ne playhouse theatre at tarrant county college to make this pink dream a reality.
This design for Legally Blonde: The Musical, was a part of our 2018 spring semester theatrical lineup. In it I worked with the stagecraft classes and a crew of 6 volunteer students to craft this set. The director stressed a look of expense beyond what my budget provided, so we made do with a creative use of color to lend the aesthetic we needed. The wooden paneling in the all of the scenery was hand-painted and used a series of layered colors to make the wood look more authentic, despite its affordability. The wallpapering was much the same; an elegant stencil and richer pinks made the set pieces look more inviting and lively. As a bonus, almost all of the set pieces served multiple functions, making efficient use of the design without adding unnecessary expense. The court room scene reversed is the blue-tiled bathroom. Elle’s bedroom reversed is the hair salon scene replete with hair salon accoutrements and dog pictures.
I also served in additional roles for this play. As well as set designer, I acted as a painter, carpenter, workshop foreman, and stagehand. For my first real project, I wanted to make it my own so I gave it everything that I had.
With the set, our crew, phenomenal cast, and Susan’s vision we managed to sell out 4 of the 5 shows we put on; the 5th’s lackluster attendance was largely due to a heavy storm. By all accounts, a massive success.
